Positive psychology adds to definitions of wellbeing by including aspirations to develop further and continually improve confidence levels.
So what do we mean by wellbeing? In 2002, Keyes coined the term ‘Flourishing’ to describe wellbeing and it describes a state of happiness and optimum functioning. Interestingly back in 2002, Keyes studied the incidence of flourishing in the US and he found that only 17% of people studied fell into the Flourishing category. I wonder what percentage of the UK workforce now would fall into this category?
Worrying about the percentage of people who may fall into the ‘flourishing’ category, however, is not in keeping with the spirit of Positive Psychology. Positive psychology would suggest that a better investment of our time would be creating the sort of organisational environments that will facilitate higher levels of flourishing amongst our workforces..
